Emma Frost is a character appearing in Marvel Comics. Initially a supervillain opponent of the X-Men, she eventually became more of an anti-hero. She is the love interest for Tony Stark in Fall of X.
Background[]
Emma Grace Frost was born in Boston, Massachussets, as the second of three daughters. A mutant, she developed telepathic abilities after she reached adolescence. After spending some time as a party girl and social outcast, she later decided she wanted to be a teacher, but her father disapproved of this career choice, as he wanted her to take over the family business, Frost Technologies, a competitor of Stark Enterprises (then run by Howard Stark). Disowned by her father, Emma spent some time homeless in New York, but eventually became a stripper for the Hellfire Club, using her psychic powers to make men see what they wanted to see. Eventually, she got the attention of Sebastian Shaw, an influential member of the club. He revealed they were not really a Gentleman's Club, but a secret society of power brokers, led by an Inner Circle ranked by chess themed designations. In addition to leading the Circle as the Black King, Shaw was also a mutant, like Emma. He offered her a position within the Inner Circle as their White Queen. Emma accepted, and assisted in Shaw's plans, putting her into conflict with the X-Men and the Avengers.
First Encounter With Iron Man[]
Back when Iron Man was wearing the Model 08 armor, Emma had infiltrated Stark International as Hazel Kendal. She had used this position to steal several pieces of armor technology designed to protect soldiers from telepathic attacks. While Stark had tracked her down, Emma had anticipated his interference and had several supervillains under her thrall attack him, giving her a chance to escape. It was only years later that Iron Man would realize that Emma Frost and Hazel Kendal were one and the same.
Hellfire Gala[]
Emma eventually became an ally of the X-Men, and when the mutants gained their own nation on Krakoa, she became a key figure in the new nation's government. During the Hellfire Gala, an annual state dinner event where Krakoan leaders meet with dignitaries from other nations, Emma meets Tony Stark again. As Tony had been a longtime ally of mutant rights, and his father had been a member of the Hellfire Club, he was something of a perennial VIP at these events. Stark discreetly raised his concerns about recently revealed Krakoan techology that enabled mutants to resurrect the dead. Stark warned Emma that this technology is something that normal humans are not likely to understand, and humanity has a long history of hating and fearing things it does not understand. However, before their discussion could delve deeper, the conversation was interrupted by Feilong, who had crashed the Gala uninvited. Feilong and Stark argue about Krakoa's recent annexation of Mars - this is a sore spot for Feilong, as he had hoped to colonize the red planet and resents the Avengers for not safeguarding it. Sensing the tension between the two men, Emma politely leaves.
Tony and Emma meet again some time later, after Feilong has acquired Stark Unlimited in a hostile takeover. Tony visits Emma on Krakoa in search of intelligence on Feilong. Emma shares information about Feilong's encounter with the X-Men on Phobos, but scoffs at the notion of Feilong being a dangerous opponent.
Fall of X[]
With Feilong in control of Stark Unlimited, his organization, Orchis, creates a new breed of Sentinel with Iron Man technology and launches a devastating attack on Krakoa, leaving many mutants dead. Two Stark Sentinels arrive at the Hellfire Club to arrest Emma, noting that she has several outstanding Interpol arrest warrants. Iron Man comes to their aid, attacking the Sentinels, but their technology proves too powerful for the Model 70 armor. Knowing that Orchis cannot afford to murder an unarmed Avenger in broad daylight, Stark gives the armor to Emma and instructs her to fly to safety.
Tony and Emma rendezvous in the old Morlock Tunnels underneath New York. Tony provides her with a brunette wig, fake eyeglasses, and an inhibitor ring that is disguised to look like a wedding ring. As long as Emma wears the ring, she cannot use her mutant powers, but the same dampening field that nullifies her powers will also fool the biometric scanners of the Sentinels, making them think she is an ordinary human. Since "Hazel Kendal" still has the security clearances of a Stark Unlimited employee, Tony suggests that Emma stick to that identity for the time being.
At the celebration announcing Tony Stark becoming the new Black King of the Hellfire Club, Feilong shows up uninvited, and Emma briefly removes her ring intent on using her mutant powers to destroy him. Tony, reminding Emma that murdering Feilong in public would be a bad idea, puts the inhibitor ring back on her finger, and Feilong mistakes this for a marriage proposal. Sensing an opportunity to entrap their nemesis, the two arrange a wedding in Vegas. When Feilong shows up uninvited, as anticipated, Emma probes his mind, giving Tony a chance to finally see Howard Stark's final recording. Emma recognizes the metal Howard mentions as Mysterium, and Tony decides that an Iron Man armor made from the metal would be just the tool he needs to defeat the Stark Sentinels.

Quotes[]
- "For a guy who was about to walk down the aisle for the first and only time in his life, I wasn't nervous--until I opened those doors and saw her standing there. She looked beautiful. She was courageous and witty, and I knew this was an arrangement--a means to an end--but I didn't need to be a futurist to take one good look at the woman and know...Emma Frost was going to break my heart. And, damn, was I looking forward to it."

- "I love Christmas Eve. Maybe even more so than Christmas itself. It's the one night of the year when the entire world just...stops. In those few hours before the dawn - human, mutant, everyone, just sort of holds their breath in sweet anticipation...waiting to see how badly they're going to be disappointed in the morning. In its own tragic way...it's kind of romantic. That's why I love Christmas Eve."
