"A suit designed for stealth and silent operation. The suit heavily minimizes electrical, thermal, and sonic emissions. Beam-weapon sonics are reduced but their power output is reduced as well."
―(Iron Man 3 - The Official Game) The Mark XVI's description in Iron Man 3 - The Official Game.

The Mark XVI (Mark 16), also known by its name as "Nightclub", is a Black Stealth Suit, and was one of several new Iron Man Armors created by Tony Stark as part of the Iron Legion. The armor was created sometime after the Battle of New York.[1]

It was featured in Iron Man 3, and made its debut when Tony ordered J.A.R.V.I.S. to initiate the "House Party Protocol", in which it was activated along with all the other suits to aid Tony in his battle against Aldrich Killian.

The suit earned its name the "Nightclub", because just like "Sneaky", it has a Cloaking System embedded within its armor, only it is more advanced and can fully blend in with its environment, especially during the night.

Since the suit was built with an Advanced Cloaking System, it has very limited weapons, and does not carry as much as the Mark XV does, to allow its stealth system to take place and run smoothly. The only weapons it carries, are its signature repulsors that it retains from its previous Mark suits. The Mark XVI is only suitable for stealth missions and is not suitable for heavy combat.[2]

Armor Design

The Mark XVI design was based off on that of the Mark XV. Instead of the chrome plated colored scheme of the Mark XV, it has a black color scheme with silver plates on it. The suit has a slim and sleek appearance, allowing flexibility in movement during stealth missions.

The suit, just like its predecessor, is much lighter than the usual Iron Man suit, to enhance its speed and the effects of its stealth system, making it the perfect suit suitable only for stealth missions. The suit retains the signature Repulsors, as well as its Chest Repulsor and its Arc Reactor that have been used in the previous Mark suits. Its arc reactor, eyes, and repulsors are red. This suit bears a small resemblance to the War Machine Armor Mark I.

It also has a unique design on the face plate, having no facial slit and a smoother surface on the mask, as well as a curved and a more streamlined design of the armor's helmet.

Armor Capabilities

Advanced Stealth

Just like its predecessor, the Mark XVI has a cloaking system embedded into the armor. Its stealth is more advanced than the Mark XV's. The armor seemed to possess advanced color camouflaging technology, as it could appear in the classic red and gold coloring, as well as turning completely black to help conceal itself in dark environments.

Armor Features

The Mark XVI technology and design, included all of the special characteristics of the Mark XV, such as the the cloaking system embedded in its armor, the slim and sleek appearance to allow flexibility, and the light weight of the suit that enhances its speed and its stealth system's effects.

Unlike all the other suits, these are the only features in common with the Mark XVI and the Mark XV.

The Mark XVI was built to specialize purely in stealth as well as have the ability to have a long-lasting effect during stealth missions, and so makes use of a more advanced cloaking system, that was based off its predecessor's more basic system.

Its advanced cloaking system allows it to use pure stealth, which makes it entirely invisible to enemy warnings and allows it to completely blend in with its environmental surroundings, especially during the night. This feature allows it to go completely unseen and is only suitable during stealth missions.

Most of the suit's energy is directed towards its cloaking system, to be able to supply it with enough energy to keep it running for as long as it can, as well as to enable it to run smoothly, in times when its stealth mode was needed.

The suit retains its technological systems, that have been used in the previous Mark suits. Such as the suit's status system, its flight system, the navigation system controlled by J.A.R.V.I.S., and the anti-icing system, along with J.A.R.V.I.S. to control the suit and take place as its A.I. While the suit also features its new system, which is its specialty, the advanced cloaking system.

The suit, being built to be compatible only for stealth missions,  is not suitable for heavy combat nor is it as combat-ready as the usual Iron Man suit. It has very limited weapons, and its only weapons are the signature repulsors that it retains from its previous Mark suits. The suit is only suitable for stealth missions and is very limited to heavy combat.

Advanced Donning System: The Mark XVI, along with all the other newly built Mark suits, uses a more advanced technology that was based off on the Mark VII technology, which is able to wrap itself around Tony's body, without the aid of robotic arms or any external mechanics.

It can flexibly open itself to allow Tony to enter into the suit and automatically wrap itself around him, anywhere at anytime, much like the Mark XLII's technology and the other newly built Mark suits'.

Since the Mark XVI was built purely for stealth, it has very limited weapons. Despite its limitation to weapons, it is still combat ready and retains its only signature weapons, which are the Repulsors on its feet and hands, as well as the one on its chest which is called the Unibeam. These are the only known weapons of the Mark XVI.

The Mark XVI's Repulsors retains the signature repulsors that were used in the previous Mark suits, as well as its Vibranium Powered Chest Repulsor, and has the same power level from before.

The repulsors on its hands can be used as a powerful weapon as well as a source of thrust during flight, and the ones on its feet are used for flight stabilization and can also be used as a weapon.

The Unibeam, can be used as well as a very powerful weapon, but only in dire situations or when needed, as it drains the suit's power faster than the regular repulsors on its hands and legs.

Before Iron Man 3

The Iron Legion and Creation

The Mark XVI in the Hall of Armors.

Sometime after the events of The Avengers, Tony, who was haunted by what happened in New York, got obsessed in making more Iron Man suits. One of them was the Mark XVI

This time, he designed the Mark XVI to specialize in pure stealth, and much like its predecessor, created an advanced cloaking system that was built within the suit's armor, for it to be able to completely blend in with its environment.

Completion and Storage

After creating the Mark XVI suit, he kept it under his house in the place called the Hall of Armors, in where he kept all the other Mark suits that he had created one after the other except for the original 7 Mark Armors. After he was finished creating the Mark XVI, he pursued to creating the next Mark suit, which was the famous Mark XVII, or otherwise known as the "Heartbreaker".

Iron Man 3

Malibu Raid

When Tony's Malibu Mansion was raided, and later destroyed, the Mark XVI along with the rest of the Iron Legion were still stored safely within the Hall of Armors Chamber, as it was left undamaged during the attack. The chamber was still intact, completely sealed, and concealed from view.

This was part of Stark's plan, in which the Iron Legion was to be used later after he uncovered the truth behind the Mandarin and A.I.M.

Activation of the "House Party Protocol"

When Tony was in the docks along with his best friend Rhodey, in his confrontation with Aldrich Killian, he ordered J.A.R.V.I.S. to initiate the "House Party Protocol", in which it was activated along with all the other suits to help Tony in his battle against Aldrich Killian.

The Mark XVI, together with all the other Mark suits, arrived at the scene, just in time to help Tony defeat Aldrich. With the Mark XVII first appearing, followed by the other Mark suits, including the Mark XVI. When Tony fights Aldrich Killian, the Mark XVI is the second suit he wears in the battle.

After Believing that Tony failed to save Pepper, Tony slides on the platform to face Killian while Killian jumps on the opposite side.

Donned and Battle Against Killian

After sliding, Tony slides into the Mark XVI. Tony and Killian exchange blows. Killian hits Tony with his right elbow, and Tony fights back with a right punch. Killian then rips the Mark XVI's shoulder plate away and attempts to hit Tony again, but Tony dodges.

Tony attempts to blast Killian, but Killian dodges it. Tony then attempts to hit Killian, but he grabs Tony's arm and scratches the right side of the abdominal region of the armor. Tony hits Killian in the face with his other arm and presses Killian on the railing. But Killian rips a piece of the Mark XVI’s left arm away. Immediately after that, Killian and Tony try to punch each other at the same time, but end up punching each other’s arms. The right gauntlet of the Mark XVI was completely destroyed. Killian breaks his arm, but it heals. Then Killian pushes the Mark XVI away, then jumps onto the armor, and punches into the Arc Reactor, destroying the armor.

Before Killian punches into the Arc Reactor, Tony ejects from the Mark XVI.

Tony continues fighting using the Mark XL.

  • The Mark XVI was one of the many newly introduced suits, that were based off on the armors in the comic books, in the movie Iron Man 3.

  • Both the Mark XVI and the Mark XV, were the first two suits in the entire storyline of the Iron Man films, including The Avengers, to feature a stealth ability.
  • The Mark XVI was one of the many suits that could be seen in the Iron Man 3 movie theatrical poster, along with the Marks XVII, XXIV, XXXIII, XXXIX, and XLI, with the Mark XLII being worn by Tony.
  • In the movie, the Mark XVI had a different color scheme compared to its original design of having the black and gold color scheme. Instead it had a red and gold color scheme, just like the basic Iron Man suit has. This may imply that it could have been an error, or a customization to the director's desire while making the film.
  • The Mark XVI's name is more commonly referred to as the "Nightclub Armor", other than its original name which is just "Nightclub".
